Theakston Brewing Company

The Theakston Brewing Story…

T&R Theakston Ltd is an independent, family brewing company founded in 1827 located in the Yorkshire Dales market town of Masham, North Yorkshire. The company is controlled and run by direct family descendants of the founder Robert Theakston. Theakston is one of Britain’s oldest established family brewing companies.

The company is a member of the British Beer and Pub Association, the Independent Family Brewers of Britain and a supporter of the Government’s Drinkaware campaign, CAMRA and Pub is the Hub. The company is renowned as brewing innovators; brewing a wide range of cask conditionedcraft keg and brewery conditioned draught beers, as well as bottled and canned ales for the UK domestic and several overseas markets.

Among the beers produced is Theakston Old Peculier, a beer for which the company is famous. The 19th century brewery is of a traditional ‘tower’ construction, containing many of the original features, thus upholding the great tradition of the English top-fermented brewing method.

The Company supports customers and consumers through specific branded activity and also the community through sponsorship of environmental, cultural and sports related activities. The principal community projects are the Ure Salmon Trust, a programme aimed at the restoration of the River Ure (that runs through Masham) as one of the finest wild salmon rivers in England; The Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, the biggest of its genre; The Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year, a greatly prized literary award and sponsorship of the Theakston Nidderdale Cricket League, the biggest village cricket league in the World.

Theakston Old Peculier

Old Peculier is possibly one of the country’s most well-known and loved ales. This unique, beautiful brew is often imitated but never matched and is sold literally all over the world. With countless awards to its credit, it is something of which every Briton can be very proud and is the epitome of the greatest of British brewing tradition. In the early years of the modern brewing era, about two hundred years ago, many brewers produced a dark, strong ‘stock’ beer in the winter months, to provide a base amount of fermented beer to add to beers brewed in the rather more volatile months of the summer. Old Peculier probably owes its origins to this. The name pays tribute to the unique ecclesiastical status of Masham as a ‘Court of the Peculier’ and is also reference to the strong characteristic of the beer! For many years it was affectionately referred to as Yorkshire’s ‘Lunatic’s Broth’.

Old Peculier is a beautiful, yet very simple beer, brewed using a very generous blend of finest pale, crystal and roasted barley with two bitter hops combined with the majestic and noble ‘Fuggle’ hop to produce a beer of awesome full-bodied flavour with subtle cherry and rich fruit overtones. It tastes superb when accompanied by rich stews, strong cheeses and sweet puddings.
